The quality in the design of printed newspapers in Scandinavia has moved up a gear. Record high numbers of metal prizes to printed media. Online news design disappoints.
These were the conclusions after the annual award ceremony Thursday May 12 in Stockholm.
– The jury’s general impression is, that Scandinavian newspaper design is currently in top world class. This year there were awarded more gold and silver medals than ever before in the competition’s more than 25-year history, says the chairman of the competition committee in the newspaper designers’ organization SNDS, editor in chief Flemming Hvidtfeldt, Aarhus.
Scandinavia’s largest newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, swiped the table. The Finns could go home with three gold medals and scoring of the Best of Show for a new magazine design. The other gold medals were won by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet and the Danish daily Politiken.
Silver certificates were handed over in Stockholm to Svenska Dagbladet, Politiken, the Norwegian Dagens Näringsliv, Helsingin Sanomat and Sydsvenskan. A total of 75 Scandinavian newspapers had submitted for assessment.
On the other hand the chairman for the online jury, Kim Pedersen, states, that the design quality in online media is declining because the development of online design has not high priority in the media companies. No online media won gold this year, but silver awards were given to Sydsvenskan.se and Norwegian Adressa.no.
A total of 68 Scandinavian Web sites competed.
